Baltic Supramax Index (BSI)

Since 2012, the first proposals for a major change in routes and ship sizes for the BSI started to be formulated. After a time of discussion, market observations and revised proposals, a decision was made.

As of 3 April 2017, the Baltic Supramax Index has been based on the following description:

Standard “Tess 58” type vessel, non-scrubber fitted, with the following characteristics:

– 58,328mt dwt on 12.80 m ssw
– Max age 15 yrs
– LOA 189.99m, beam 32.26m, TPC 57.5
– 72,360 cbm grain / 70,557 cbm bale
– 5 holds, 5 hatches
– 4 x 30t cranes with 12 cbm grabs
– 14 knots laden on 33mt fuel oil (380cst) / 14 knots ballast on 32mt fuel oil (380cst), no diesel at sea
– 12 knots laden on 24mt fuel oil (380cst) / 12.5 knots ballast on 23mt fuel oil (380cst), no diesel at sea

Route definitions:

Route 1B:
Delivery passing Canakkale trip via Mediterranean or Black Sea to China-South Korea range, laydays/cancelling 5/10 days from index date, duration 40-50 days, 5% total commission
Weighting = 5%

Route 1C:
Delivery South West Pass (US Gulf) trip to North China-South Japan range (Shanghai-Tokyo Bay), laydays/cancelling 3/10 days from index date, duration 50-55 days, 5% total commission
Weighting = 5%

Route 2:
Delivery North China (Shanghai-Dalian range) for one Australian or Pacific round voyage redelivery North China, laydays/cancelling 5/10 days from index date, duration 40-50 days, 5% total commission
Weighting = 20%

Route 3:
Delivery North China (Shanghai-Dalian range) trip to West Africa (Dakar-Douala range), laydays/cancelling 5/10 days from index date, duration 55-65 days, 5% total commission
Weighting = 15%

Route 4A:
Delivery US Gulf trip to Skaw-Passero range, laydays/cancelling 5/10 days, duration 25-30 days, 5% total commission
Weighting = 7.5%

Route 4B:
Delivery Skaw-Passero range trip to US Gulf, laydays/cancelling 5/10 days from index date, duration 25-30 days, 5% total commission
Weighting = 10%

Route 5:
Delivery West Africa (Dakar-Douala range) trip via East Coast South America to North China (Shanghai-Dalian range), laydays/cancelling 5/10 days from index date, duration 60-65 day<s, 5% total commission
Weighting = 5%

Route 8:
Delivery South China (Fuzhou-Fangcheng range, incl. Taiwan) trip via Indonesia to East Coast India (Chennai-Paradip range), laydays/cancelling 5/10 days, duration 20-25 days, basis coal cargo, 5% total commission
Weighting = 15%

Route 9:
Delivery West Africa (Dakar-Douala range) trip via East Coast South America to Skaw-Passero range, laydays/cancelling 5/10 days, duration 45-50 days, 5% total commission
Weighting = 7.5%

Route 10:
Delivery South China (Fuzhou-Fangcheng range, incl. Taiwan) trip via Indonesia to South China (Fangcheng-Fuzhou range), laydays/cancelling 5/10 days, duration 20-25 days, 5 % total commission
Weighting = 10%

The Baltic Exchange Supramax Index (BSI) replaced the Baltic Handymax Index (BHMI) on 3 January 2006.

The Baltic Supramax Index is based on the following description:

Standard “Tess 52” type vessel with grabs as follows:

– 52,454 mt dwt self trimming single deck bulkcarrier on 12.02 m ssw
– 189.99 m LOA 32.26 m Beam 5ho/ha 67,756 cum.grain 65,600 cum.bale
– 14L /14.5B on 30mt (380 cst) no mdo at sea
– Cr 4 x 30 mt with 12 cum grabs
– Maximum age – 10 years

Route definitions

Route 1A:
Delivery Antwerp/Skaw range for a trip of 60/65 days redelivery Singapore/Japan range including China 5 percent commission total. Laycan 5/10 days in advance.
Weighting = 12.5%.

Route 1B:
Delivery passing Canakkale for a trip of 50/55 days redelivery Singapore/Japan range including China 5 percent commission total. Laycan 5/10 days in advance.
Weighting = 12.5%.

Route 2:
Delivery South Korea/Japan range for 1 Australian or trans Pacific round voyage, for a 35/40 day trip, redelivery South Korea/Japan range 5 percent commission total. Laycan 5/10 days in advance.
Weighting = 25%.

Route 3:
Delivery South Korea/Japan range for a trip of 60/65 days redelivery Gibraltar/Skaw range 5 percent commission total. Laycan 5/10 days in advance.
Weighting = 25%.

Route 4:
Delivery Gibraltar/Skaw range for one trans-Atlantic round voyage of 45/50 days, redelivery Gibraltar/Skaw range, 5% commission. Laycan 5/10 days in advance.
Weighting = 25%.

On 2 January 2007 Route 4 was split into Route 4A (US Gulf trip to Skaw-Passero) and Route 4B (Skaw-Passero trip to US Gulf), weighting 12.5% each. The TC average therewith comprised of 6 routes.

Two more routes followed but were not included as part of the index calculation:

Route 5:
Delivery West Africa trip via East Coast South America to North China

 Route 6:
Delivery West Africa trip via East Coast South America to Skaw-Passero
